Aurora Borealis Inspired Cards

Card Measurements and Supply List for these projects are found at the bottom of this blog post.

Over Mother’s Day weekend my family went on a lovely spur-of-the-moment adventure to take pictures of the Aurora Borealis that was amazingly visible this far south. Friday night we were able to get some pretty bright pictures with my camera in night mode. On Saturday we took the six hour drive north to get another glimpse of the light display. Unfortunately, Saturday night wasn’t as bright but we were able to get a few pictures and enjoy the gorgeous night sky. I was inspired to get out my blending brushes and White Craft ink refill with my favorite mountain & tree dies and recreate what I saw. I’ve included a few of the pictures I was able to snap on Friday & Saturday nights.

After using blending brushes to create the night sky, I mixed a small bit of water with the White Craft Ink from the refill and a paint brush to add white speckles to the panels.
I die cut a bunch of Basic Black cardstock mountain & tree pieces to layer on the completely dry sky panels.
I started with a slightly larger panel and cut it down to create the card front. I used blending brushes to create the sky on Basic White cardstock and then lightly splattered Craft White ink on the panel to create the stars.
Once the created sky was dry I layered die cut mountain and tree pieces with glue dots & glue to create the scene. I then layered the finished panel on a Basic Black cardstock panel before adding to the card base.
I added a Basic White cardstock panel to write my message. I also created an extra matching front panel to cut down for strips to add to the inside & back of the card to pull the theme through.

I die cut a Basic Black cardstock frame from the In the Grove dies and used Stampin’ Dimensionals to add the frame to the sky panel. I then layered on die cut Basic Black cardstock mountain pieces by slipping the pieces under the frame using glue dots and Stampin’ Dimensionals. If I made this again I would use the Black Stampin’ Dimensionals instead of the white ones.

  1. Wow! Very creative and realistic pieces. Thanks for info on how you made the gorgeous backgrounds. Love the cards. We saw the Lights in Iceland but not as bright as you saw. Enjoy your day!
